How Often Should I Get an Eye Exam? (And Other Eye Exam FAQs)

Eye exams are essential in protecting and preserving your vision and eye health. At Optical Expressions, serving Scottsdale and Phoenix, AZ, our eye doctors provide routine eye exams and a variety of other optometry services. Are you wondering, “How often should I get an eye exam?” We have the answer to that, as well as a few other eye exam FAQs our eye doctors commonly receive to give you a better idea of what to expect when you come in for your next routine eye exam.

How Often Should I Get an Eye Exam?

This depends on your age, medical health, eye health and state of your vision. If you have good vision, you may only need an eye exam every two years. If you have problems with your vision, you should see our eye doctor annually. If you’re over 40, our optometry specialist may recommend you get an annual eye exam.

What Can I Expect from an Eye Exam?

Our eye doctor will test your visual clarity, eye focus, and eye teaming skills to ensure your eyes are working as they should. These tests will also indicate if you have refractive errors that are impairing your sight. If so, we’ll write you a prescription for corrective lenses to improve your vision.

We’ll also check for signs of eye diseases and conditions like macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Our optometry specialist will give you eye drops to dilate your eyes so we can examine the internal structure of your eye to determine if you have eye health issues.

How Long Do Eyeglass Prescriptions Last?

Eyeglass prescriptions are generally good for two years, although some may expire sooner, depending on the condition of your eyes. Contact lens prescriptions generally expire after one year. It is important to stay up to date on your prescription by getting regular eye exams.

Are Eye Exams Painful?

No. Some patients may feel mild discomfort, such as when looking into bright light or when their eyes are dilated. Otherwise, eye exams are relatively painless.
